24/09/16 Inter County Rounds Development Championships

On Saturday Ashford boxing Club travelled to Gosport ABC, who hosted the inter county rounds, of the Southern counties national developments championships. With Ashford boxers Jack Ewbank and Charlie Smith.

1st to box Jack Ewbank 69kg v Will Whitehorn 69kg of Guilford ABC. Round 1 Whitehorn tried to out reach Ewbank with his slapping shots, but the Ashford boxer slipped effectively and got straight to work behind his jab, then hooking lefts to the body. Then shipping attacks back to the head with both hands. Comfortably winning the first round.

The 2nd round saw the Ashford boxer cheekily lead off with his right hand, followed by digging left hooks to the body. Ewbank also put together good 2 and three punch combinations with clever footwork, to catch Whitehorn and the referee administrating an 8 count. The Crawley boxer gamely tried to fight back, but the Ashford boxer was to sharp for his opponent. Shipping punches to both head and body.

In the 3rd and final round, Ewbank was comfortably working with his combinations and delivering hurtful body shots against Whitehorn who was now feeling the pace. At the end of the final round. Jack had firmly placed himself in the Southern counties final with a unanimous points win.

Second to box Ashford’s Charlie Smith 60kg v Emmanuel Ally 60kg of Crawley ABC. Charlie started the contest well behind his jab. Rather than his usual aggressive all out style. He followed his jabs with solid punches to head and body. A part from the occasional successful jab, the Crawley boxer just seemed to be out of timing with his punches. This worked in Charlie’s favour, allowing him to move in and out. Picking his shots nicely.

Round 2, the Crawley boxer stepped up his pace, trying to mix it with the Ashford boxer. Smith though stuck to the game plan, using aggressive punches off his good head movement making it harder for Ally to connect.

In the 3rd and final round, both boxers came out strong and having their fair share of success in the first minute. The Ashford boxer kept his composure and started throwing hard overhand rights off his jab. followed by hard body blows. This continued throughout the rest of the round. Charlie’s display of good controlled yet strong boxing, earned him a place in the Southern counties final by way of a unanimous points victory.

This was Charlie Smith’s first ever 3×3 minute rounds in the category (B) development championships. Who now joins Jack Ewbank, Jez Achong and junior boxer Eric Swan in the Southern counties finals. Being held at Golden Ring Gym, Evenlode Road, Millbrook, Southampton. SO16 9FX. W/in 10am to 12noon. Boxing 12.30.
